Looking Ahead – Racing at Oulton Park
The GT Cup heads to Cheshire this weekend as the championship visits Oulton Park for a one-day supercar spectacular.
Members of three different race groups make up the top three points positions in the overall championship table with GTO duo Paul Bailey and Ross Wylie leading the way with 235 points. Feathers Motorsport’s James Guess and Tom Canning nabbed a win and three podium finishes at Snetterton, boosting them into second in the overall table. J&S Racing’s Sacha Kakad and Hugo Cook sit third in the title fight on 204.
It should come as no surprise that as the leader of the Overall Championship, Bailey and Wylie also lead the Group GTO title fight. Woodrow Motorsport’s Chris Murphy sits 64 points behind on 171 points with Grahame Tilley and Sennan Fielding in third on 94. Following mechanical troubles for their Mosler, National Motorsport Academy will be bringing their Lotus Evora to Oulton Park with Jay Shepherd behind the wheel.
The car sitting second in the overall title is the Group GTH leader on 207 points. Guess and Canning lead Makehappen Racing’s Stephen Walton and Chris Hart. Makehappen’s duo are the the group’s only pure sporting driver lineup but with a win and two podium finishes from Snetterton, you wouldn’t think it. Third in the Group GTH title fight is Paddock Motorsport’s Tim Docker and Jordan Albert with 150 points, but with Makehappen’s second entry of Jon Currie and Phil Keen just 7 points behind, it could all change this weekend.
J&S Racing’s Kakad and Cook continue to improve in their Audi R8 and managed to maintain their Group GT3 points lead coming to Oulton Park. James Wallis and Sam Maher-Loughan snuck into second in the title fight, passing Orange Racing powered by JMH’s Simon Orange and Tom Roche. Lucky Khera and Euan Hankey return to the grid this weekend and will be hoping to climb up the points table. Also returning to the track is Greystone GT’s Rich Mason and Jon Lancaster with their Lamborghini Huracan GT3.
In Group GTC, TopCats Racing have maintained the points lead following two wins and two podiums last time out. Behind the TopCats Lamborghini on 156 is the triple threat of Russ Lindsay, Patrick Collins and Will Dendy. The trio are improving week on week and remain a team to watch. An incident on Saturday in Norfolk for Matty Evans and Kev Clarke put a damper on their points haul but they’ve managed to maintain third in the table. As a result, Clarke will be racing on his own this weekend.
Oulton Park is a unique event on the GT Cup calendar as it’s run over a single day. All the track action takes place on Saturday and starts with a 15-minute free practice session followed by two 15-minute qualifying sessions. Instead of the usual Sprint and Pit-Stop Race combo, our single day events feature two 40-minute Pit-Stop Races.
Track action kicks off on Saturday morning with free practice at 08.55. Plus, both races will be broadcast live on Facebook and YouTube.
